No New Thing

Nothing New Under the Sun?

“That which has been is that which will be, that which is done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun. Is there anything of which it may be said, “See, this is new?” It has already been in ancient times before us.”
( Ecclesiastes 1)

The amazing advances that man has made in every science over the centuries has increased the size and complexity of our reservoir of knowledge, but the basic nature of life has not changed one whit for one scary reason: man has not changed at all. Regardless of our boasting, our arrogance, our smugness over our achievements, the cycle of life has not changed. Man has not evolved into some superior being! He is at his core what he has always been and he does what he has always done. He is born, he lives, he dies, and most go out into eternity shaking their fist at God, like Stalin, or in despair, like Voltaire.

The nature of man has not changed. Let me remind you that 4,000 years ago man was sacrificing his child by placing him into the fiery molten brass arms of his god to gain favor with him, but we sacrifice our children to the god of “Self” by burning them to death with a saline solution so we can enjoy life. More than 2,000 years ago little girls were given or sold by their parents to the pagan temple priests for prostitution. Today the child (even babies!) sex trade is so profitable and so widespread among all levels of society that governments turn a blind eye. Around 600 years before Christ the most aggressive and sadistic empire was the brutal Assyrian Empire. When their most famous king, Nebuchadnezzar, captured the king of Israel, Zedekiah, he had his sons killed before his eyes, then he put out Zedekiah’s eyes, bound him and carried him to Babylon to parade him in the streets. (Jeremiah 52) Some say they used nose hooks to lead their captives around. Pretty sadistic, huh? But how about the border patrol agent caught by the drug cartel who was tortured, and when they saw he was dying had a doctor inject his heart with a drug to keep him alive so they could torture him more. How many wars have been fought to free a people and not for the power it gave ruthless and greedy men?

Man is no better than he ever was. So, what is God’s position? Somewhere around 700 B.C. the prophet Isaiah spoke for God these words:

“Behold, the LORD’s hand is not shortened that it cannot save; nor His ear heavy that it cannot hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; and your sins have hidden His face from you so that He will not hear. For your hands are defiled with blood and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue has muttered perversity. No one calls for justice, nor does any plead for truth. They trust in empty words and speak lies. The way of peace they have not known, and there is no justice in their ways.”
(Isaiah 59)

Does it remind you of anything?

This same prophet summed it up in this succinct verse: “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned everyone to his own way, BUT…God has laid on Christ the iniquity (sins) of us all.” God knew that man could never, nor would he if he could, save himself, so God with a love we cannot understand sent His Son to take human form, to live, to die and to miraculously live again that we might be rescued from ourselves.

“As many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe on His name.”
(John 1:12)

For those of us who have we call Him, “Abba,” Father.
