Who Do You Trust?

Approximately 150yrs. ago Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote a book simply titled, “Nature.” One of the things he writes is about how we take truths found in nature to express truth in our language. I admit to having to read this section (in one of Warren Wiersbes’ books) over a couple of times, but it intrigued me. For instance, we say things like, a rolling stone gathers no moss, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, make hay while the sun shines. If you try you will be amazed at the commonsense sayings you come up with that are nature-based. But that is a prelude to what he wrote that follows.

“The corruption of man is followed by the corruption of language. When simplicity of character and the sovereignty of ideas is broken up by the prevalence of secondary desires, the desire of riches, the desire of pleasure, the desire of power, the desire of praise – and duplicity and falsehood take the place of simplicity and truth…old words are perverted to stand for things which are not (a paper currency is employed when there is no gold in the vault). In due time the fraud is manifest, and words lose all power to stimulate the understanding or the affections.” We finally figure out people don’t mean what they say and the words are being used to hide the reality for devious purposes.
So… nobody believes anybody; there is no confidence that the words are truthful, and hence, there is a lack of trust. The result is that when you listen to politicians, preachers, teachers, even friends and family, not to mention commercials, you are not sure you are getting the truth. Trustworthy people are scarcer than hen’s teeth as my Mother used to say. And everybody should know by this time that the internet breeds half-truths as well as outright lies. This condition ends up like a person with a sore tooth that just gets more painful and infected and will eventually turn to anger and bitterness. Take a good look at what is happening in the world. The infection is manifesting itself. So…who do you trust?

About 3,000yrs. ago, God said this:

“For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, and do not return there, but water the earth, and make it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.”
(Isaiah 55)

God says what He means, and He means what He says, and for His children this is where our trust is…in Him! Everything that He has said would happen on planet earth has already happened or is in the process of happening. The Apostle Paul wrote to the Romans that the whole creation is groaning under the weight of man’s sin; waiting for its redemption. And we know that every promise God has made to His redeemed children living on this planet, as a loving Father, He has kept and will continue to keep.

“The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble, and He knows those who TRUST in Him.”
