God Is Still Speaking

I remember a young teen asking me in great seriousness; “What about all the people in the world who have not heard about God; what happens to them?” It was in a Sunday School class and we had been talking about heaven and hell. I turned to John 1:9; “That was the true Light (Jesus) that gives light to every man coming into the world,” and I said that if God tells us He has revealed Himself to every person then by faith I accept it. I have been asked that question many times as a Pastor, and if I could go back I would take time to discuss with that class the ways God does specifically speak to people.

It should be pointed out that most people aren't interested in God speaking to them and as Romans 1:20,21 says, “...what may be known of God is manifest in them (mankind), for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His (God) invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they (mankind) are without excuse...professing themselves to be wise they became fools.” But God keeps on speaking.

The ancient prophets recognized His voice in creation. Moses prayer is recorded in Psalm 91: “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.” And David penned these inspired words; “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge. There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard. Their sound has gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.” All of creation tells us to look up, look all around. Technology has given science the knowledge too discover amazing intricacies in the human body. Space exploration is giving us spectacular views of our universe. The only credible explanation is God. He speaks through the world He has created. Job 38-41 is His science textbook!

That's not all. He has given us a partial biography of Himself comprised of 66 small books. He reveals His personality, His value system, He reveals His emotions, what He thinks about us, what He wants from us, His plans for the future of the world, His attributes. It records how He came down here, took on human form, lived among us, showed us and taught us how to live, gave His life as the only perfect sacrifice so we could have our sin washed away, become His children and be made fit to live in His kingdom forever. “And the Word (Jesus) became flesh and dwelt among us and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” BUT He makes it clear all along the way that He is Sovereign God and in the end it is “His way or the highway.” Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life, no man comes to the Father but by Me.” God is still speaking.

There is another way God speaks; He speaks through His children. If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold all things have become new...Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ...” (2 Cor. 5:17) “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God has prepare beforehand that we should walk in them.” (Eph. 2:10) The old saying, “You may be the only Bible some people will ever read” is true. We represent Him on this planet.

I close with one of my “pet peeves.” What about our literal speech? Does that count? Jesus thought it did: “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings for evil things. But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. (Mt. 12:35-17) We are told to let our “speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one?” (Col. 4:6) Can you picture Jesus using the vulgar phrases many Christians use by justifying them as part of today's culture? Would He laugh at the bathroom jokes many Christians find funny? The world may disdain the Bible and ignore creation, but trust me, they are watching us, and we need to clean up our act!
